"We encourage caution, transparency, and public oversight regarding government use of surveillance and other emerging technologies"

The History of the Name
The Visible Government League is rooted in a pivotal moment in Longmont's history. In the 1920s, this original group was the force that pushed the Klan out of our city.
At a time when a secret society attempted to run Longmont as a "shadow organization" from within the City Council and School Board, the League took to the local newspapers. They campaigned against the secrecy and shadow-pulling that threatened our democracy, insisting that government must be visible to the people it serves.
Today, we believe surveillance technology represents a similar "shadowy" activity—often deployed behind the scenes without public knowledge or consent. We've reclaimed this name to continue the mission: demanding transparency and ensuring that no part of our local government operates in the dark.
Longmont ALPR Surveillance Map
Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) are cameras that scan every vehicle passing by, creating a detailed record of where and when residents travel. This map shows known surveillance locations across Longmont.
Data Source: This map is provided by DeFlock, a community-driven project mapping surveillance infrastructure. Locations are crowdsourced and may not be exhaustive.
Identify Cameras: Want to help map surveillance in your neighborhood? Check out our Common ALPR Identification Guide (PDF) to learn how to spot them.
